In the fall of 2007 I made a goal of planting 1000 trees....

0003: Italian Stone Pine

The second tree we planted today was a Pinus pinea "Italian Stone Pine" which I had used as my Christmas tree these last holidays. It's one of my favorite trees to use for small live Christmas trees because of it's pretty pale bluish green, wide bushy shape, and short needles.

We planted this two gallon tree down the hill from the house, between the greenhouse and the current trailer location, with the irrigation ditch behind it. In the photo you can see the cattle shelter.

Family: Pinaceae (py-NAY-see-ay)
Genus: Pinus (PY-nus)
Species: pinea (PY-nee-uh)

0002: Mondell Pine

Ray and I made another trip up to Potter Valley, this time for the main purpose of tree planting. I got four little 2 gallon Christmas trees on a 75% off sale two days before Christmas.

The first one we planted was a Pinus eldarica "Mondell Pine" and we put it on the property line, between the neighboring vinyard and my dad's future driveway extension.

Family: Pinaceae (py-NAY-see-ay)
Genus: Pinus (PY-nus)
Species: eldarica (el-DAR-ee-kuh)

0006: Coast Redwood

The third redwood was from a pot that my mom had been growing, a Sequoia sempervirens "Coast Redwood", a bit paler in color than the Aptos Blues I bought, and not bushed-out from the nursery pruning.

Family: Cupressaceae (koo-press-AY-see-ay)
Genus: Sequoia (see-KWOY-uh)
Species: sempervirens (sem-per-VY-renz)

0005: Sequoia Aptos Blue

We planted the three redwoods of the day, including this second Sequoia sempervirens 'Aptos Blue', or "Aptos Blue Redwood", in a row continuing from two previously planted smaller redwoods.

It's interesting that the Coastal Redwood is the Sequoia genus, though the Giant Sequoia are the Sequoiadendron genus in the same family.

Family: Cupressaceae (koo-press-AY-see-ay)
Genus: Sequoia (see-KWOY-uh)
Species: sempervirens (sem-per-VY-renz)
Cultivar: Aptos Blue

0004: Sequoia Aptos Blue

The third tree of the day, and the first of three redwoods, was one of two Sequoia sempervirens 'Aptos Blue', or "Aptos Blue Redwood".

Genus: Sequoia (see-KWOY-uh)
